Headstones: A History @ Central

Have you ever wondered how headstones are made, and by whom? What do the inscriptions and motifs actually mean?

Guest lecturer John Hill, Chair of the Cranston Historical Cemeteries Commission, will provide valuable historical insight of the symbolism, artistry and tradition surrounding these memorial monuments. Please register through this link to the Cranston Arts Commission's website.

Following the lecture, attendees will have a chance to do their own exploration by taking part in a self-guided scavenger hunt of a local cemetery of their choosing. By completing the scavenger hunt requirements, attendees will be entered to win a gift card to a local business!

The Cranston Arts Commission is a volunteer city commission dedicated to encouraging, promoting, and supporting public access to the arts, cultural programming, and local creative talent across Cranston, Rhode Island.

The Cranston Historical Cemeteries Commission was established by the Cranston City Council and is a group of volunteers, appointed by the city, to locate, assess, document, and provide signage for Cranston’s historic cemeteries.
