If landline, internet, and cell phone access all go down during a catastrophe, how will you keep in touch with your loved ones? Join licensed amateur radio operator Barry Noel to explore means of communication that keep friends and family members connected during disasters or emergencies. Learn why preparing and practicing a communications plan is so important. Watch demonstrations of various types of radio transmissions for use during incidents that disrupt standard methods of keeping in touch. This event will be held in the William Hall Library auditorium and will include an outdoor component if weather permits.

Free and open to the public. Registration is not required but those who register at least three days prior to the event will receive an email reminder.

Presenter Barry Noel has been a licensed amateur radio operator since the 1990s, with a particular interest in Emergency Communications. He has been a volunteer with the Providence Emergency Management Agency (PEMA ) Radio Civil Emergency Services (RACES) program for the past 15 years, and has been involved with the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) program for many years. He does not consider himself a “techie,” but simply a person who enjoys the amateur radio hobby.
