Introduction to Frame Drumming @ William Hall
A frame drum (such as the tar, the bendir, the bodhran, and the tambourine) is defined as a hoop-shaped drum with a diameter much greater than the depth of its shell. The soft, quiet voice of the frame drum is meditative and centering in nature, and playing them can yield significant benefits for anyone. Come learn the basic techniques and rhythmic possibilities of this unique instrument—no musical experience necessary. A limited number of frame drums will be provided. Read more information about frame drums and watch a performance video below.
Free and open to the public. Space is limited and registration is required. Register below or contact the library for assistance.
Thomas Terceira has taught people of all ages to play hand drums and percussion instruments. He is an advocate for the power of art, poetry, and music to build community and enrich life.
Frame drums are among the oldest known musical instruments and have been used in music, ritual, and spiritual ceremonies for thousands of years. Frame drums were particularly associated with the worship of goddesses in the Mediterranean world. Watch frame drum performance “Hatra” written and performed by Glen Velez on Met Music below.
